Seme and Kisumu West Sub-Counties within Kisumu County have experienced significant challenges due to the HIV pandemic, with adverse impacts on the local population. Poverty is prevalent, particularly among families, placing a disproportionate burden on children. In response to these pressing issues, the overarching objective of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) programming is to enhance the resilience of families and children affected by HIV and AIDS. This enhancement aims to empower them to address their health, economic, education, and social development needs effectively.
To effectively address the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, PEPFAR-funded programs are mandated to prioritize interventions for specific groups. These groups include children who have lost a parent to HIV/AIDS, those directly affected by the disease, and those residing in areas of high HIV prevalence, making them vulnerable to the disease or its socio-economic consequences.
In Seme, the initiation of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project in 2013 was made possible through the support of the Henry Jackson Foundation Medical Research International (HJFMRI), serving as the project’s funder. This initiative is a critical step toward mitigating the challenges faced by the local community and addressing the multifaceted impact of HIV/AIDS on families and children in the region.
